What does an assistance dog do?

Disability can lead to isolation, loss of confidence and feelings of low self-esteem. Not only that but for many disabled people being unable to do even a simple task like picking up the post can leave them feeling depressed and worthless. Dogs for the Disabled trains dogs to assist with practical, everyday tasks to help a disabled person live life to the full.

These are just some of the range of tasks that an assistance dog trained by the charity will be able to help with:
bulletOpen and close doors
bulletHelp a person dress and undress
bulletBark to raise the alarm in an emergency
bulletRetrieve items such as a telephones or dropped articles like keys or a bag
bulletEmpty the washing machine and fetch the post
bulletSwitch the lights on and off
bulletPress a pedestrian crossing button
bulletReach up to shop-counters and carry a shopping basket
bulletHelp people to walk by providing a stable base and forward motion

In fact, a registered assistance dog with Irish Dogs for the Disabled provides an extension of the disabled person’s abilities. In addition an assistance dog gives enormous psychological benefits, breaking down barriers to the outside world and helping to improve confidence and stress levels. I

At Irish Dogs for the Disabled we believe that by training a dog with specialist skills, it will provide not just independence but also give therapeutic care and further enhance the development of a physically disabled child.

"A big thanks for giving my son, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the gift of a friend, with whom he can laugh, play and most importantly walk...Since he is teamed up with Elkie, nothing can scare him anymore. Thank you.
